17-Year-Old Girl Found Dead in Remote NT Community; Man, 34, Arrested
A 34-year-old man has been arrested after a 17-year-old girl was found dead inside a home in the remote Northern Territory community of Galiwin’ku on Elcho Island, with police treating the death as suspicious.
Northern Territory Police said officers were called to a residence shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday following reports that the teenage girl was unconscious.
Local police, assisted by staff from the community health clinic, attended the scene, but the 17-year-old was declared dead at the residence.
Detectives from the Serious Crime Section have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Police confirmed that a 34-year-old man, who was known to the victim, was arrested following the incident. Authorities are treating the case as a domestic violence-related investigation, although no charges have been announced at this stage.
Investigators remain at the scene as they continue gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses to establish exactly what occurred.
Police have not released the identity of either the victim or the arrested man.
