A 17-year-old student is in hospital after he was allegedly stabbed during an altercation at the Islamic College of Brisbane in Karawatha, with the attack unfolding in front of primary school children and triggering a school lockdown.
Emergency services were called to the school shortly before 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday following reports of a stabbing. Queensland Ambulance paramedics treated the teenager at the scene before transporting him to Princess Alexandra Hospital with life-threatening injuries. Authorities later confirmed he was in a stable condition in the intensive care unit.
Queensland Police allege the victim was stabbed multiple times with a small knife during a confrontation involving another student. The alleged attacker, a 16-year-old boy, fled the school on foot before being located a short time later in a vehicle on Gowan Road, Stretton, where he was arrested without incident.
The teenager has been charged with acts intended to maim, disfigure or disable and unlawful possession of a Category M weapon. He is due to appear before the Richlands Children’s Court.
Witnesses said the alleged stabbing occurred in view of younger primary school students, leaving many distressed. The school was placed into lockdown for about two hours before students and staff were safely dismissed. Counselling and wellbeing support have been offered to those affected.
Queensland Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community and have appealed for anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the Karawatha area around the time of the incident to contact investigators. Detectives are continuing to examine the circumstances that led to the alleged attack
