A 15-year-old boy was taken to hospital after he was allegedly stabbed during an incident at a high school in Cairns, prompting a major police response and the arrest of another teenager.

Emergency services were called to Trinity Bay State High School in the suburb of Manunda shortly before midday on Monday following reports that a student had been stabbed. Queensland Police said the victim suffered an alleged stab wound to the abdomen and was transported to Cairns Hospital for treatment. His injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.

Police said a second 15-year-old boy left the school grounds on foot immediately after the incident. Officers located him about 30 minutes later in the nearby suburb of Kanimbla, where he was taken into custody without incident. He is currently assisting detectives with their inquiries.

Authorities said the two boys were known to each other and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to students, staff or the wider community. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged stabbing, including what may have led to the confrontation.

In a message sent to parents and carers, Trinity Bay State High School Executive Principal Tony Whybird said the incident had been distressing for the school community and that additional wellbeing support had been arranged for students and staff.

“This is a distressing incident, and our thoughts are with the student, their family and everyone affected,” Whybird said, adding that counselling and support services would be available.

Police remained at the school for several hours as officers examined the scene and interviewed witnesses. Investigators have not yet released details about the weapon allegedly used or whether any charges have been laid.

Queensland Police have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to contact investigators as inquiries continue
