EDMONTON, Alberta — Homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a 23-year-old woman after she succumbed to injuries sustained at a home in southeast Edmonton.
According to the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), officers were called to a residence in the Silverberry neighbourhood at approximately 6:44 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, following reports of an unresponsive woman suffering from suspicious injuries.
When officers arrived, they found the 23-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries. Emergency Medical Services treated her at the scene before transporting her to hospital, where she remained in critical condition.
An adult man was taken into custody shortly after police arrived at the residence. Investigators have not released his identity, and no criminal charges had been announced as of Monday.
The woman died in hospital during the early hours of Sunday, July 12, prompting the Edmonton Police Service Homicide Section to assume responsibility for the investigation.
Police have scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday, when the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to determine the official cause and manner of death. The results will help investigators decide the next steps in the case.
Authorities have not disclosed the relationship between the woman and the man who was arrested, nor have they released any details about the circumstances that led to her injuries.
Investigators have also not identified the victim publicly, pending formal identification and notification of her next of kin.
The homicide investigation remains in its early stages, and detectives continue to gather evidence from the Silverberry residence while interviewing witnesses and reviewing the events leading up to the incident.
