A man has been shot dead in Sydney’s north-west after he was found critically injured inside a car in what police believe is a targeted attack.
Emergency services were called to North Rocks Road, Carlingford, shortly after 7am on Wednesday following reports of a shooting. NSW Police said officers located a man, believed to be in his 30s, inside a vehicle suffering significant injuries.
Despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified, and police are working to notify his next of kin.
A crime scene has been established, with detectives from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad taking carriage of the investigation. Specialist forensic officers spent Wednesday morning examining the vehicle and surrounding area for evidence, while investigators canvassed nearby businesses and homes for CCTV footage that may help identify those responsible.
North Rocks Road was closed in both directions for several hours as forensic examinations were carried out, and motorists were urged to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
Police have not announced any arrests or identified any suspects, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain in their early stages. Detectives are examining whether the victim was specifically targeted and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage from the area around the time of the shooting, or has any information that may assist the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers.
The fatal shooting is the latest in a series of public place firearm incidents across Sydney that have prompted ongoing investigations by NSW Police into organised and serious crime
