Adelaide CBD crime concerns grow after violent incidents leave worker assaulted and bystander injured . Concerns have been increasing over rising crime and antisocial behaviour in Adelaide’s CBD after two fresh violent incidents on Wednesday left a fast-food worker assaulted and an innocent bystander injured during a police chase.
The first incident occurred at about 4:20am at a Hungry Jack’s restaurant on Pulteney Street. Police allege that a man jumped over the counter and assaulted an 18-year-old employee before taking food items and fleeing with a female companion.
The man has been charged with assault and theft and has been refused police bail. The woman has been charged with disorderly behaviour and was granted bail to appear in court at a later date.
Meanwhile, the young worker suffered minor injuries and was left shaken. However, he did not require any further hospital treatment and is recovering well.
Even before this matter was over, shoppers witnessed another dramatic incident in Rundle Mall, where police chased a wanted man who was eventually tackled near Pulteney Street.
According to witnesses, two officers ran after the suspect for several hundred metres before several more police officers joined the pursuit to restrain the alleged offender.
Unfortunately, an innocent female bystander was accidentally knocked over, causing her to fall and strike her head on the footpath. She was immediately treated by paramedics and is currently reported to be in a stable condition.
According to South Australia Police, the 23-year-old Rosewater man was wanted on an outstanding warrant and in connection with an alleged robbery committed last month.
Police later allegedly found him carrying a flick knife, a balaclava, and multiple driver’s licences belonging to other people.
The accused has been charged with numerous offences, including providing a false name to police, hindering and resisting police, assault, assaulting a prescribed emergency services worker, carrying an offensive weapon without lawful excuse, unlawful possession, and multiple traffic-related offences.
He has been refused bail and is expected to appear before the Adelaide Magistrates Court later this week.
These two incidents have renewed concerns among Adelaide CBD residents, retailers, hospitality workers and tourists, who regularly visit the city centre. Business owners say aggressive behaviour, theft and repeated assaults have become an increasing concern in recent months.
South Australia Police have increased high-visibility patrols across the city and have urged anyone who witnesses suspicious or violent behaviour to contact police immediately.
Investigations into both incidents remain ongoing, and police say further information will be released as the investigations progress.
