A young man has died after falling from a building in Sydney’s central business district, with the incident leaving witnesses shaken and prompting a critical incident investigation by New South Wales Police.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Kent Street and Market Street at about 2.20pm on Tuesday, July 14, following reports that a man had fallen from a building. Multiple police units and paramedics rushed to the scene, where a large emergency response unfolded in the heart of the city.
NSW Police said officers from Sydney City Police Area Command had attempted to engage with the man, believed to be in his 20s, before he fell. Police immediately began CPR until NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived, but despite their efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A crime scene was established at the busy CBD intersection as police closed off sections of the area while forensic officers conducted their examination. The incident caused significant disruption to pedestrians and traffic during the afternoon peak period.
An office worker who witnessed the tragedy described the moments leading up to the incident as deeply distressing.
“The police car pulled up just moments before everything happened,” the witness told local media, adding that many people nearby were left in shock. According to the witness, around 20 onlookers were visibly upset, with several seen crying after the incident.
NSW Police confirmed a Critical Incident Team from Kings Cross Police Area Command will investigate the circumstances surrounding the death. As is standard procedure for incidents involving police contact, the investigation will also be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and independently overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC). A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
Police have not released the man’s identity, and there is no suggestion of criminal involvement. Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations continue
