GRANITE CITY, Illinois — A U.S. Steel employee has died following a workplace accident at the company’s Granite City steel mill in Illinois, prompting investigations by local authorities and workplace safety officials.
The fatal incident occurred at U.S. Steel’s Granite City Works, though company officials have not publicly released details about how the accident happened. The identity of the employee has also not been disclosed pending notification of family members.
In a statement, U.S. Steel confirmed that one of its workers died in the incident and expressed condolences to the employee’s loved ones and coworkers. The company said it is cooperating fully with the investigation and is working alongside the United Steelworkers union and relevant government agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
Emergency responders were called to the steel mill after the incident, but the worker could not be saved.
Authorities have not indicated whether the accident involved heavy machinery, rail operations, or another part of the manufacturing process. Officials said the cause remains under investigation.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is expected to examine the incident to determine whether any workplace safety violations contributed to the fatality, a standard procedure following industrial workplace deaths.
Granite City Works is one of U.S. Steel’s major integrated steel manufacturing facilities and has operated for well over a century, employing thousands of workers in the region.
The tragedy has deeply affected employees at the plant, with company officials saying support services have been made available to coworkers impacted by the loss.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released once authorities complete their preliminary findings.
