A 45-year-old man has been arrested following the alleged attempted murder of an elderly man who was brutally attacked while out on his regular morning walk in Sydney’s south-west.
NSW Police had issued an arrest warrant on Sunday for Corum Ash, 45, after the 74-year-old victim was left fighting for his life following the alleged assault in Yennora.
The victim, a married father of three, had left home for his usual early morning walk when he was allegedly attacked around 4.40am on Saturday on Orchardleigh Street, about 50 metres from his home. He was found unconscious with severe head injuries by a passer-by, who alerted emergency services. The elderly man was rushed to Westmead Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and remains in a critical but stable condition. Due to the seriousness of his injuries, investigators have so far been unable to interview him.
Police announced on Monday evening that a 45-year-old man was arrested in Carlingford at about 8.30pm and taken to Parramatta Police Station, where detectives continue to question him in connection with the alleged attempted murder. As of Monday night, no charges had been formally laid over the Yennora attack while investigations continued.
Authorities had earlier released Ash’s photograph and warned the public not to approach him, describing him as Caucasian, about 170-175cm tall, of medium build, with short black hair, black eyes and an unshaven appearance. Police said he was known to use public transport and frequented the Carlingford and Fairfield areas.
Detective Acting Inspector Brenton Sommerville earlier described the incident as a “cowardly and callous attack” on a vulnerable member of the community. Neighbours told local media the victim was a quiet, peaceful man who faithfully walked the same route every morning. One neighbour said the pensioner had been walking for around 30 minutes before the alleged assault occurred.
Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses, dashcam footage or any information that may assist the investigation. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers or NSW Police.
