Police have launched a major manhunt after a man was shot dead while sitting inside a car in what investigators believe was a targeted execution-style attack in Sydney’s north-west on Wednesday morning.
Emergency services were called to North Rocks Road, Carlingford, shortly after 7am on July 15, following reports of a shooting. Officers from The Hills Police Area Command arrived to find a man, believed to be in his 30s, suffering multiple gunshot wounds inside a vehicle. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene.
Police have established a large crime scene, with homicide detectives from the NSW Police State Crime Command Homicide Squad assisting local investigators. The victim has not yet been formally identified, although Acting Superintendent Michael Marinello said the man was known to police and investigators believe he was the intended target of the shooting. Authorities stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public and described the incident as an isolated, targeted attack rather than a random act of violence.
Investigators believe multiple gunshots were fired at the victim, with residents reporting hearing loud bangs between 5am and 5.30am, almost two hours before the victim was discovered. Detectives are working to establish the exact timeline of events and whether the victim was shot before the vehicle came to a stop outside the property.
According to multiple reports, the victim has been identified as Jack Cheung, a man in his 30s. While police have not officially confirmed his identity, reports suggest he had limited criminal history but was believed to have links to the Coconut Cartel, an emerging organised crime group currently involved in a violent feud with the Alameddine crime network. Investigators have not publicly confirmed whether the killing is connected to organised crime
