A 16-year-old boy has been charged after a security guard was stabbed while trying to break up a fight at a licensed beer vendor in Winnipeg’s West Broadway neighbourhood.
According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers responded to reports of an altercation at the East Gate Inn licensed vendor, located at 685 Westminster Avenue, at around 10 p.m. on June 30. Police said a security guard initially intervened to stop a fight between a youth and another patron.
Shortly afterward, the same youth allegedly became involved in a second altercation. When security staff stepped in again, the youth allegedly pulled out an edged weapon and stabbed the guard in the upper body before fleeing the scene.
The injured security guard was transported to hospital and remains in stable condition, police said.
A large police response followed, involving patrol officers, the tactical support team, canine officers and the drone unit. During the search, officers located an 18-year-old man who was allegedly attempting to hide. A knife was seized, and the man was arrested before later being released on an appearance notice. He has been charged with failing to comply with the conditions of a release order.
Investigators later identified a 16-year-old male as the primary suspect. Officers arrested him at a residence on Wardlaw Avenue shortly before 1:50 a.m.
The teen has been charged with assault with a weapon and two counts of failing to comply with a sentence. He remains in custody as the investigation continues.
