A man has died and another is in critical condition after two connected shootings in Toronto’s Scarborough area on Monday afternoon, police said.

The incidents, which occurred on opposite sides of Highway 401, are being investigated as Toronto’s 17th homicide of 2026.

Sequence of Events

The violence unfolded shortly before 3:20 p.m. when Toronto police were called to the area of Victoria Park Avenue and Highway 401 following reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they located a man suffering from a gunshot wound on Terraview Boulevard, south of Highway 401. Despite emergency efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Around the same time, police received another 911 call after a bystander discovered an injured man near Victoria Park Avenue and Esquire Road, close to Sheppard Avenue East on the north side of Highway 401.

Officers found the second victim suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to hospital under emergency conditions with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators later confirmed the two incidents are connected, although they have not determined where the shootings actually occurred or whether the two men shot each other.

Speaking at the scene, Duty Inspector Jonathan Rose said detectives are pursuing all available leads and have deployed significant resources to the investigation.

Police are interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses, and canvassing both neighbourhoods for additional evidence.

Authorities said there is no evidence of an ongoing threat to public safety, but residents can expect an increased police presence while the investigation continues.

The fatal shooting marks Toronto’s 17th homicide of the year.

Witnesses Describe Chaotic Scene

Residents living near Terraview Boulevard described hearing the gunfire before seeing the aftermath outside their homes.

A 16-year-old witness said he looked out his apartment window after hearing loud noises and saw one man lying motionless on the pavement before noticing another victim bleeding nearby.

His mother said she was left shaken by what she witnessed.

“I was extremely disturbed,” she said. “I was crying. Literally, my hands were shaking. I couldn’t even believe what I was looking at. It’s very disturbing because spiritually that’s somebody’s family member. One minute they were here, the next minute they’re gone.”

Toronto Police’s Homicide Unit has taken over the investigation.

Investigators are urging anyone who witnessed the shootings or has dashcam, doorbell or surveillance footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact police.
