A Ferrari driver was killed and his female passenger suffered life-threatening injuries after a horrific single-vehicle crash in Victoria’s West Gippsland region on Saturday afternoon.
The fatal crash occurred at around 12:00 pm on Main Neerim Road in Neerim South, approximately 120 kilometres east of Melbourne. Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports that a red Ferrari had left the roadway, slammed into a tree and overturned.
How did the crash happen?
According to preliminary police investigations, the Ferrari was travelling along Main Neerim Road when the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road before crashing into a tree and rolling onto its roof.
The exact reason why the driver lost control remains under investigation. Police have not confirmed whether speed, driver error, a medical episode, mechanical failure or road conditions contributed to the crash.
Immediate emergency response
Police, Ambulance Victoria and rescue crews responded within minutes of the emergency call.
Paramedics treated the injured female passenger at the scene before she was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening upper-body injuries.
Despite emergency efforts, the male Ferrari driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Victim yet to be identified
Authorities have not yet released the identity, age or hometown of the deceased driver, pending formal identification and notification of his next of kin.
Police have also not identified the injured woman, who is believed to be in her 70s.
Ferrari Club drive
Investigators said the Ferrari was travelling as part of a Ferrari Club Victoria group drive. The convoy was reportedly heading to a local hotel for lunch when the tragedy occurred.
Although several club members arrived moments after the crash, none witnessed the collision itself.
Was speed responsible?
The president of Ferrari Club Victoria said the deceased driver was highly experienced and indicated he did not believe excessive speed was responsible. He instead questioned whether there was sufficient warning signage for the series of bends on Main Neerim Road.
Police have not confirmed any cause and are continuing their investigation.

Video recorded after the collision showed the red Ferrari overturned on its roof while emergency personnel worked to rescue the female passenger.
